Hello, my name is Karen Alberts and I am the Speech-Language Pathologist at the Ralph Wheelock School. This is my eighth year in the Medfield schools. Prior to working in Medfield, I was the clinic manager at Braintree Rehabilitation Outpatient Pediatric Center where I provided speech and language services to children of all ages as well as did contract work in schools in the Boston area. I also worked as part of the Learning Disabilities Team at Children’s Hospital, Boston, doing oral and written language evaluations.
I graduated with a degree in Communication Disorders from Worcester State College and received my master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology from Boston University. I live in Franklin with my husband and my three sons (ages 6, 4, and 2).
As the SLP at Wheelock School, I am responsible for screening, assessing, diagnosing, and treating students with various communication disorders. The speech domain of communication incorporates articulation/phonology, fluency, and voice. Language includes: auditory comprehension and verbal expression as related to vocabulary, grammar, and word structure. Pragmatics, or social skills, also falls under the realm of language. Additionally, communication includes pre-reading skills (phonological awareness) and literacy (reading and writing). I collaborate with the classroom teachers as well as the other special educators to facilitate communication and academic success across the different classroom settings.
For the seventh year in a row, Mrs. Johnson, the school psychologist, and I are going into all of the second and third grade classrooms to introduce and/or review the social thinking curriculum (Michelle Garcia Winner), including the four parts of a conversation, as well as the Zones of Regulation (Leah Kuypers) to the students and teachers. Please follow the links on my page to learn more about these programs.

I will also be doing "Word of the Week" with my students. They will be exposed to a new vocabulary word each week. Halfway through the year, I am going to change it to "Idiom of the Week." I will post them on my website. Please click on the link for weekly updates on the new word or idiom.
